Private Yacht Charter on the Costa Brava: Routes, Coves and Planning

The short answer

A private yacht charter on the Costa Brava is best enjoyed from late May to early October, departing from ports such as Palamós, Roses or L'Estartit. The classic routes explore the coves around Begur and Calella de Palafrugell, the Medes Islands marine reserve, and the wild coastline of Cap de Creus near Cadaqués. Plan around the wind, book early for summer, and keep the day unhurried.

The Costa Brava was made to be seen from the water. From land, its coves hide behind pine forests and steep cliffs; from the deck of a yacht, they open one after another, each a different shade of turquoise. A private charter turns a stretch of coastline into a day of swimming, slow lunches and small villages that seem built for arriving by sea.

This guide covers the routes we love, when to go, and how to plan a day aboard that feels effortless.

Why charter a yacht on the Costa Brava?

The northern coast of Catalonia stretches from Blanes to the French border and is defined by rock, pine and clear water. Many of its most beautiful coves are reachable only by footpath or by boat, and in summer the footpaths fill early. A yacht offers the opposite experience: space, privacy and the freedom to choose your anchorage based on the wind and your mood.

It is also the ideal contrast to the city. After several days in Barcelona, a day on the water resets the pace of a trip.

The best routes for a private charter

Begur and the coves of the Baix Empordà

The coastline between Begur and Calella de Palafrugell is the classic choice. Expect Aiguablava, with its sheltered water, the tiny fishing hamlet of Sa Tuna, and the whitewashed houses of Tamariu, Llafranc and Calella. This route suits first-time charterers and families, with short hops between swimming stops.

The Medes Islands

Just off L’Estartit, the Medes Islands form a protected marine reserve. The underwater life here is remarkable, and the snorkeling is among the best on the coast. Anchoring rules are strict to protect the seabed, so an experienced local crew matters.

Cadaqués and Cap de Creus

In the far north, the landscape turns raw and lunar. Cap de Creus is a natural park where the Pyrenees meet the sea, and Cadaqués, the whitewashed village long associated with Salvador Dalí, is best approached by water. This route is spectacular but more exposed to the wind.

Tossa de Mar and the southern coast

Further south, the medieval walled town of Tossa de Mar rises above its bay. Combined with the coves around Sant Feliu de Guíxols, this route works well for guests staying closer to Barcelona.

How should you plan a Costa Brava yacht day?

  1. Choose your base. Many guests combine the charter with a stay in the Empordà, where boutique hotels and country houses sit among olive groves and medieval villages. Others travel from Barcelona for the day.
  2. Pick the right vessel. Motor yachts cover more coastline; sailing yachts offer a quieter, more romantic rhythm. Group size and comfort preferences decide the rest.
  3. Respect the tramontana. This strong northerly wind can arrive with little warning, particularly around Cap de Creus. A good captain will adjust the route on the day, and a flexible plan is part of the luxury.
  4. Decide on lunch. A light lunch on deck, or anchoring off a village to eat ashore. Palamós is known for its prawns, and seafood rice by the water is a regional ritual.
  5. Leave time at either end. Morning departures catch the calmest water. Plan a relaxed return in the late afternoon, ideally with a drink as the light softens.
  6. Book early for July and August. The best crews and vessels are reserved well in advance for high summer.

What does a perfect day aboard look like?

A private car collects you after a slow breakfast. By mid-morning you are stepping aboard in Palamós. The first stop is a cove so clear you can see the anchor resting on the sand. You swim, then motor north past Llafranc’s lighthouse toward Aiguablava. Lunch might be served under the bimini, or ashore at a beachfront table.

The afternoon brings more swimming, perhaps paddleboarding, and a slow return along the cliffs. By the time you reach the marina, the sun has turned the rocks amber. Our Costa Brava by private yacht experience is built around exactly this kind of day.

How to extend the experience

The Costa Brava is part of a wider region worth lingering in. Add a day among the coast’s villages with Costa Brava, Between Sea and Stone, or a medieval day inland with Girona & Besalú, Privately. For the full picture of the region, visit our Costa Brava destination guide.

Honeymooners often place the yacht day at the heart of their trip; our Barcelona honeymoon itinerary shows how it fits.

What should you bring on board?

Pack light and soft. Most crews ask guests to go barefoot on deck, so leave heels and hard-soled shoes in the car. A small bag with swimwear, a linen cover-up, a wide-brimmed hat and high-protection sunscreen covers almost everything. Bring a light sweater for the return, when the breeze off the sea can feel cool even in summer.

Towels, snorkeling equipment and drinking water are usually on board, and special requests, from a particular wine to dietary needs, can be arranged in advance. If you plan to go ashore for lunch, a pair of sandals and something easy to slip on is all you need.

Is a yacht charter suitable for families and groups?

Yes, with the right planning. For families, we favor sheltered routes with short distances between coves, shaded areas on deck and a crew comfortable with children. Life jackets in the right sizes are arranged ahead of time.

For celebrations and small groups, a yacht can become the setting for a birthday lunch, an anniversary toast or a relaxed team day. In those cases we think carefully about space, timing and the moment you want to mark, whether that is a sunset aperitif or a surprise on arrival at a particular cove.

What about seasickness and comfort?

Most of the coves along the Baix Empordà are calm, especially in the morning. Guests who are sensitive to motion should choose a larger motor yacht, sit toward the middle of the vessel and avoid long open-water crossings. The captain will always choose the most comfortable anchorage for the conditions of the day.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a yacht charter on the Costa Brava?

Late May through early October offers the warmest water and most settled weather. June and September are especially pleasant, with fewer boats in the coves than in July and August.

How far is the Costa Brava from Barcelona?

Depending on the departure port, the drive from Barcelona takes roughly 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. Esenzia Travels arranges private transportation to and from the marina.

Can we have lunch on board or in a restaurant?

Both work beautifully. Some guests prefer a light lunch served on deck, while others anchor near a coastal village and go ashore for seafood at a beachfront restaurant.

How much does a private yacht charter cost?

It depends on the vessel, the season, the length of the charter and the number of guests. Esenzia Travels shares a tailored quote after the complimentary consultation.
